Canal Saint Martin

Construction of the canal was ordered by Napoleon I in 1802, in order to create an artificial waterway for supplying Paris with fresh water to support a growing population. The canal was also used to supply Paris with food (grain), building materials, and other goods, carried on canal boats.

Today, the canal is a popular destination for Parisians and tourists who watch the barges navigate the series of locks and road bridges. There are also a number of popular restaurants and bars along it. On Sunday, the canal is strictly pedestrian.

On sunday the canal is closed to traffic and many people come walking and watching the boats go by.

The canal is shown in the 1938 film Hôtel du Nord, directed by Marcel Carné.

Hotel du Nord nowadays is a very popular place

The bakery next door, where you can get your french baguettes every morning :-)

The canal appears in the 2001 film Amélie, in which the title character enjoys skipping stones at the locks of the canal.
